<p>People love having <strong>lucid dreams</strong> because they can help them process problems they are having in their waking hours. When people are awake they can&#8217;t cartwheel over a skyscraper or fly (at least, not without the help of an airplane or helicopter) but in their dreams they can! There are plenty of things to do in a lucid dream that you might not be able to do while you are awake.</p>

<p>Be the Puppet Master! If you can control the actions and situations of your dreams, do it! Your dream world is the only place that you can try out actions or words and not have to worry about the impact they will have on your every day (awake) life. If you&#8217;ve been crushing on someone, have them appear in your dream and admit your feelings to them. If something starts to go awry, simply change the situation or—if it is becoming too much for you to handle, just wake up!</p>
<p>Perform Super Human Actions</p>
<p>Fly! Run up the side of a building! Jump out of that fifty story window and then jump back up off the sidewalk below. Do those cheerleading moves you&#8217;ve seen on television but know would break your leg if you attempted them while you are awake. Enjoy the freedom and try the things you have always wanted to try but haven&#8217;t ever had the courage.</p>

<p>Everybody has had that dream where, at some point, they look around and go “what is going on?!?” and then realize “I must be dreaming!” There is something very surreal and interesting about feeling conscious in your dreams. You can control the elements of your dreams, you can accomplish super human feats that you would never be able to do during your waking hours (flying, leaping over buildings, etc). <p>1. Learn how to recall your dreams readily. Keep a dream journal to help you with this. The more you can remember about your dreams, the better able you will be to recognize that you are dreaming when you are asleep. This step tells your brain that you want to know more about your dreams and it will be more open to clueing you into the dream when you are having it.</p>
<p>2. When you keep your dream journal you probably start to see patterns in your dreams: certain people, places, things or situations will turn up again and again. This helps you remember that you have dreams about a certain subject when, as you are dreaming, you encounter it. Sometimes that is all it takes to clue you in to the fact that you are dreaming.</p>
<p>3. Do a few reality checks. Train yourself to ask yourself “am I dreaming” at regular intervals. Learn a few of the dream “tells” (signs changing the second time you look at them, words not being steady when you try to read them, etc) and then when you encounter a situation that you often dream about, train yourself to ask “am I dreaming” and then analyze your situation. If you do this often enough, your brain will start to perform these checks automatically, and after a while, you will be dreaming when you ask yourself that question!</p>
<p>4. If you find yourself in a lucid dream you can often control the situation by giving yourself “verbal” commands. Nobody is sure why the verbal commands work so well at helping you to control your dream, but they have been very successful.</p>
<p>5. Try to stay calm. Some people get so excited when they realize that they are lucid dreaming that they accidentally wake themselves up! Nothing is quite as disappointing as realizing “Hey! I&#8217;m dreaming!” and then suddenly being awake instead.</p>

<h2>Here are a few lucid dreaming techniques to help you achieve a lucid dreaming state.</h2>
<p>Dream Recall: Of all of the <strong><a href="http://www.luciddreamingtechniques.org/lucid-dream-tips">lucid dreaming techniques</a></strong> you will read about, being able to remember your dreams is absolutely the most important. Every morning think back over your dreams. Try to remember every detail of them. Even trying to remember your dreams will teach your brain that you are placing importance on dreaming and it will start to pay more attention to what is happening while you dream. Write down every detail of your dreams that you remember into a dream journal. Even if you only remember a few details, write them down. As time goes on, you will be able to remember more and more details and you might find yourself able to remember your whole dream.</p>
<p>Pay Attention: Pay attention to the details you are writing down in your dream journal. This, too, will teach your brain that you want your dreams to be important and your brain will start to pay more attention during the dreaming process. You should also look for patterns. You will eventually start to see trends or patterns in your dreams. The same people or situations will start to pop up. Make a note of these patterns so that your brain will know that they are important when they turn up in your dreams.</p>
<p>Reality Testing. There are two types of reality testing: The first is to, on a regular basis, ask yourself if you are dreaming. If you make a habit of asking yourself if you are dreaming a few times during your waking hours, your brain will start to ask itself if it is dreaming while you are asleep. The law of numbers says that it is bound to happen while you are dreaming, and the stronger the habit is, the more likely you are to have lucid dreams on a regular basis. When you come across a situation or person that you&#8217;ve noticed in your dream journal as being recurring, stop and ask yourself if you are dreaming or if you are awake. This way, when it happens in your dream you will be more likely to realize that you are dreaming.</p>
<p>Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams or the MILD technique. This is one of the <strong>lucid dreaming techniques</strong> developed by Stephen LaBerge, a pioneer in the study of lucid dreaming. It consists of, basically, telling yourself that you will remember your dreams. Concentrate on the intention to remember your dream as you fall asleep. This works best after waking up from a dream that you didn&#8217;t try to remember.</p>
<p>There are many books on learning how to induce lucid dreams and if you work hard, you will have more and more lucid dreams.</p>

<p>Often the person will realize that they can control the events and characters within the dream and that they can perform actions that they would never be able to perform during their waking hours. Much scientific research has been done in the field of lucid dreams and being able to willingly enter this dream state is considered by many to be a great skill. People have described lucid dreaming to be very vivid and to feel very real.</p>
<p>There are two different ways in which a dream can become lucid. The person can have a dream-initiated lucid dream or a wake-initiated lucid dream. The first is the name given to a dream that starts out as a normal dream but during which the dreamer realizes that they are dreaming. The second method involves going directly from be overtly conscious to dreaming without any lapses in the brain&#8217;s lucidity.</p>
<h2>There are several noted scientists who have done research into the field of lucid dreams.</h2>
<p>Allan Hobson is one scientist who has done a lot of work in the neurophysiologic substance of dreams. He has brought the field of lucid dreaming into the factual and out of the speculative realm. Celia Green was the scientist who discovered that a lucid dream is wholly different from any other kind of dream (aka “normal” dream) and she was the scientist who first linked lucidity during dreams to false awakenings and the REM sleep cycle. Keith Hearne was the scientist who was actually able to prove that the brain waves during REM sleep were the most like the brain waves observed by an awake person. Stephen LaBerge, however is probably the field&#8217;s most noted researcher. LaBerge is the scientist who founded the Lucidity Institute and has published several books on ways a person can willingly enter a lucid dream.</p>
<h3>Lucid dreams are experienced most often during childhood, though they are also experienced by adults.</h3>
<p>There is scientific evidence, however, that shows children being the better able to dream lucidly. As previously stated, many people view the ability to enter a lucid dream on purpose to be an activity of high skill. This skill, while it can be developed, is highly rare and it takes a lot of work to develop it.</p>
<p>Even though the scientific research done on <strong><a href="http://www.luciddreamingtechniques.org/lucid-dream-tips">lucid dreams</a></strong> has only taken place during the last fifty years or so, lucid dreaming has been reported all throughout history. The first written record or a lucid dream was recorded by St. Augustine in the fifth century AD. <strong>Lucid dreams</strong> have been linked to a high level of spirituality, and there are Tibetan Buddhists who practice a form of yoga which is supposed to induce lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming is a field that is filled with much curiosity. Scientists and Spiritualists are equally intrigued by the phenomenon. Whether the <strong>lucid dream</strong>s is simple science or a complicated spiritual experience has yet to be determined.</p>

<p>So, you have read about lucid dreaming and decided that it is something that you want to learn to do yourself. You know you have had lucid dreams before, but the thought of making a lucid dream happen is a new concept to you. How do you go about making a lucid dream happen? Obviously you&#8217;ve read about keeping a dream journal and doing reality checks.</p>
<h2>Here are a few more easy lucid dreaming techniques to get you started on the path to becoming a skilled lucid dreamer.</h2>
<p>Technique #1 Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams: This <strong><a href="http://www.luciddreamingtechniques.org/lucid-dreaming-books">Easy Lucid Dreaming Techniques</a></strong> is also called MILD and it involves setting your mindset as you are falling asleep. This technique was developed by Stephen LaBerge, one of the leading authorities on lucid dreaming and the founder of the Lucidity Institute. It works best when going back to sleep. So, after sleeping for five or six hour, wake up, record any memories from your old dream, if you had been dreaming and then, as you are falling back to sleep, tell yourself that you will remember the next dream you have. Repeat to yourself “the next time I am dreaming I will remember that I am dreaming.” Concentrate on this single thought as you fall asleep and your brain will be very likely to pay attention to the details of the dream and possibly even keep you aware of the fact that you are dreaming.</p>
<p>Technique #2 Nap Induced Lucid Dream. This NILD technique involves staying awake for an hour or so after you wake up before going back to bed. Let yourself sleep for five or six hours. When you wake up from this period of sleep, stay up for an hour or two before going back to sleep. Focus on remembering your dreams before you let yourself fall back to sleep. Staying awake for an hour and a half has proven to be more effective than staying awake for only an hour, and six hours of sleep is better than five but it might prove to be more restful and make it harder to go back to sleep.</p>
<p>Technique #3: Try staying caffeinated right up until the time you go to sleep, or when trying the Nap Induced Dream, drink some coffee or caffeinated soda during the hour and a half that you stay awake. If you are a light sleeper, try to increase your tryptophan intake (have a turkey sandwich).</p>
<p>Technique #4: Some herbs and vitamins can help your memory recall your dreams. Some of these herbs and vitamins include Licorice Root, St. John&#8217;s Wort, Kava Kava, Lavender, Catnip, Honeysuckle, Jasmine and Nutmeg.</p>
